I just don’t understand how they calculate those numbers. In every manual transmission car I’ve owned, I never got anywhere close to the city number (meaning my MPG was always higher). I haven’t owned a CVT equipped car, but in the automatics I’ve owned, I’ve gotten below the city number many times.

Me too. I'm no hyper-miler, but generally drive in mellow mode (unless I'm not in mellow mode). I don't break down my highway/city ratios, but have always gotten better than EPA numbers in my manual cars (Acccord/MR2/Expo/Matrix/Mazda3).
